Satellite imagery early this morning showed a pretty vigorous tropical wave now tracking across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. This tropical wave has brought some very gusty weather with wind gusts of upwards to 50 mph recorded yesterday in the Virgin Islands and led to a death in Puerto Rico. This tropical wave is expected to track westward across the rest of Puerto Rico and into the Dominican Republic and Haiti today. By Friday into Saturday, this tropical wave is forecast to track into the western Caribbean and be near the Gulf of Honduras by later Saturday. Environmental conditions across much of the Caribbean are unfavorable for any sort of development as 30 to 50 knots of shear exists.
I do not expect any sort of development from this wave, however, it will bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic today into tonight and then squally weather is expected to affect Jamaica and the Cayman Islands during Friday and Friday night.
Other than that, the long range guidance as well as the overall environment in the tropics is unfavorable for tropical development and will likely remain this way for at least the next week to ten days.
